so sorry, it's been so long.

what i've been working on recently:

-just finished up a video installation called "where ae you going". it was basically me taking footage as i walked around memphis, mostly at night. i took the video and chopped it into tiny pieces, and rearranged it so that fragments repeated a lot/ i really like surrealist film, so that's where all this came from. i installed the video as a projection in a hallway. it was projected from the floor, up onto a bunch of cheesecloth that i suspended overhead. it was supposed to be about the place everyday activity hold in memory, and visually recreates the process i go through in actually trying to remember events i've forgotten. i think it worked pretty well. the critique was good. everyone's critique was good. we're all so good.

-working on a series of drawings. i'm trying to get back to where i used to be with my drawing skills. i miss it. most of the drawings are pretty minimal. i did a lot of scratchy portraits from old photographs and combined them with text. i'll show you these soon. i promise.

-proposals, proposals, proposals. i think i'm much better at proposing ideas then actually following through with them. i'll write you a proposal if you want. only $20. it's a good deal.



next up:

- a new series of photographs (i'm actually going to print them this time) dealing with how everyday routine becomes ritual and hence personal mythology.

OH YEAH!!!!!

i have a show coming up at what will be a space called "petroleum" at the powerhouse.it's a new room they're building for quote emerging artists unquote. this will be going up either at the very end of this year or early next year. no dates yet. they actually have to finish building the space first. i might be showing at the same time as the world famous R. Dijkstra, which ii'm way too excited about.

and i'm proposing to do a big installation at vini in the summer of next year, which i'm excited about. i'm going to try and get a grant to do it so maybe you won't have to pay to come.

what are you doing this summer?

BEFORE YOU WERE BORN

this is a series of six digital collages. the collages were made from xeroxes of found family photographs on top of tracing paper, where i then added drawing of maps, and diagrams about genetics and genealogy. the drawn elements are meant to reference the associations i make with the photographs. the collages were layered on top of eachother and scanned, flattened, and made into what you see here.

the series deals with the reoccurring theme of memory in my work. i see the project being largely process-oriented in it's conception. most of my work deals with me somehow trying to place myself within one complex matrix of history or another. this is the same. the process of construction is meant to reference me trying to piece together a history, that even though it is close to me, i don't know too much about.

right now, the collages are about 9x13" printed on 17x22" paper. Ideally, i think they would be around 30x40 inches.

spectacle/spectacle

here's a series of diptychs i did as an assignment for digital imaging 2. the assignment was to photograph an object and a location over two weeks time. this is what i ended up with. there was some talk in critique about the exposure of the window shots being too much (which is both kind of obvious and intentional); the diptychs are paired formally and the brightness of the tv screen is meant to mimic the amount of light coming in through the window. my intent was to focus on a this inside/outside dialogue, and to view these two scenarios as a similar sort of spectacle. i think the overexposure is kind of necessary in getting there. what do you think?

Above is an image composed of two photographs: One of the front exterior of the graduate center at the Memphis College of Art, the second is a detail showing bullet holes in the front window of the building. The image is meant to be a reflection on the dialogue (or lack of dialogue) that takes place between art world and real world, and ultimately the importance (or unimportance) not making art in a vaccuum (Posteverything).
